PAWA and IWW London social event

On June 24th, 2023, PAWA and the IWW organised a social event at the iconic Pelican House, which is home to many left-leaning organizations, including the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Office. The aim of the event was to share ideas, foster camaraderie among comrades, and socialise over food and drinks.

Although the turnout to the event wasn’t as high as anticipated, it surprisingly worked to our advantage. The few care and domestic workers who attended spoke passionately from the heart, providing enlightening and empowering insights. During the event, PAWA Co-Chair, Valentine, delivered a brief but inspiring address, encouraging unity and solidarity among all attendees. The majority of the time was dedicated to discussing next steps and strategies.

Several key issues emerged during the discussions, including the need to design and distribute informative flyers about labor rights and visas. Additionally, the idea of establishing a solidarity fund gained traction, especially to support individuals who face financial hardship due to reduced working hours.

Moreover, strategies for building trust and ensuring future events are well-attended were thoroughly discussed. Building trust within the community is essential for a strong and united movement.

Despite the initial lower attendance, the event was a huge success. Attendees relished the Zimbabwean cuisine, and the gathering provided an opportunity for like-minded comrades to share food and drinks in a convivial atmosphere.

Overall, the event achieved its goals of fostering solidarity, empowering participants, and sharing ideas. Looking forward, we are already planning another event, this time in Scotland.
